In 2010, the value of agriculture in San Diego County, Calif., totaled $1.65 billion. This represents a 7% increase from 2009’s total of $1.55 billion. Although the value increased, the acreage devoted to commercial agriculture decreased slightly by 4,578 acres or -1.5%.
The value of nursery and cut flower crops continued to rise in 2010. The No. 1 crop, ornamental trees and shrubs increased in value 14.7% to $4.2 million. The No. 2, indoor flowering and foliage plants, increased in value by 0.56% to $2.9 million. The total value for all nursery products (including cut flowers and foliage) was above $1.1 billion.
Overall acreage for nurseries and cut flowers increased slightly by 0.05%. The highest value crop per acre was indoor flowering and foliage plants at $450,000 per acre.
